Product Description

Wall sign 35.5" x 17.75" reproduction from 1930's tavern in Kodiak Alaska. Handmade.

A classic signboard, reflecting the true spirit of the primitive 1930’s Alaskan taverns. Here the famous whale harpooner Thadeus Buckminister Torgerson, more commonly known as "The Red Dwarf", took refuge over the long winter. His aim was something unbelievable. They say that after two bottles of Everclear 190 Rum, he could throw a knife from his table and bury it on the exact date on the calendar when he had to ship out again. (The calendar, pocket size, was at the other end of the bar, 179 feet away).

One day, after two bottles of his favorite, plus one of Pusser’ Concentrated Naval Rum, he bet the famous opera singer Enrico Caruso that he could sing an aria from "Don Giovanni" better than he could. After winning the competition, the name of the bar was changed to "The Whale’s Song" to honor the charismatic whaler. Since then, every time a person hears the sound the whales make, they remember the song of the legendary competition.

This signboard is a faithful replica of the original found at the door of this establishment, carved and painted 100% by hand.
